2021 Nissan Maxima Prices, Reviews, and Pictures

Overview

The 2021 Nissan Maxima is a stylish and fun full-size sedan that offers all the benefits of a traditional large car. All models come with a 300-hp V-6 engine and are front-wheel-drive. The handling is more refined than you might expect, but the Maxima is not to be confused with a Z-car. There’s ample space inside for four adults, and there are many desirable features like touchscreen infotainment and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Nissan offers standard driver assistance features, but those who want the latest tech should look at the SR or Platinum trims.

What’s new for 2021?

For 2021, Nissan launched a 40th Anniversary Edition Maxima model. This special edition model is based upon the Platinum trim but has a more aggressive appearance to honor the car’s four door sports car heritage. Ruby Slate Gray Pearl paintwork is used to offset the black exterior trim. All 40th Anniversary models include red semi-aniline leather upholstery and smoked chrome trim. White gauge faces are also included. Heated rear seats are also available. The Maxima lineup has been refocused to the SV, SR and Platinum trims, with the luxury-oriented S & SL models being phased in.

Pricing and Which One To Buy

The Platinum trim is worth the extra cost. It adds a power adjustable steering column, rain-sensing wipers, a rear sunshade and a power-operated rear sunshade. Leather seats with diamond-quilted inserts are also included. The Reserve package adds $1140 to the Maxima’s value. It includes heated rear seats, a charcoal-colored headliner and a leather-wrapped steering column.

Transmission, Engine, and Performance

Maxima is a full-size sedan that’s fast and powerful. The Maxima’s 3.5-liter V-6 produces 300 horsepower and is capable of moving it along with ease. However, the Maxima’s sport-sedan mission is hampered by its continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). A Maxima Platinum was able to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. This beat rivals like the Kia Cadenza or the Buick LaCrosse. The Maxima is a good-sized car. The suspension is firm and well-dampened, almost to the point that it may be too stiff for its class. Maxima SR has a very low body lean when cornering aggressively. In our testing, it easily outperformed its competitors.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

The Maxima’s powertrain is able to blend performance and efficiency with fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 30 highway. The Maxima’s excellent highway cruising range makes it an ideal companion for long distances. We achieved 32 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel economy test route. This was well above the Maxima’s EPA rating.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

Maxima has room for five people in a well-designed cabin with simple controls and soft-touch materials. The Maxima’s front-seat legroom ranks among the top in its class while the average headroom is second. The rear-seat space in the Toyota Avalon and Chevrolet Impala is less generous than it is in the larger competitors. Standard features include power-adjustable front- and driver seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob as well as dual-zone automatic climate controls, push-button starting, an auto-dimming rearview and mirror, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The Maxima has one of the smaller trunks in this category, which makes it difficult to haul cargo. However, the Maxima’s larger cubbies make it easy to store everyday items and the rear seatbacks can be folded down to store larger items.

Infotainment & Connectivity

Maxima’s standard Maxima model has an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. We found it to be easy to use. You can use the infotainment system as a touchscreen. However, there are also redundant buttons on its center stack that allow you to quickly access common adjustments like climate control and audio volume. It also offers vehicle monitoring, remote access and emergency services. Teenage drivers will appreciate the speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. The system also automatically contacts emergency services when an airbag deploys after an accident. It is possible to locate the Maxima and track its location in case of theft. Remote start and door lock access are also useful.
