The 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman is as exciting to drive as supercars. The 718 Boxster convertible and this coupe offer unrivalled driver engagement. Cayman’s unique chassis allows for open communication between the driver and the vehicle. Porsche has combined strong brakes with a stable suspension and a rich feedback system to create the 718. Both 718 body styles were included in our 10Best and Editors Choice lists. The brand’s flawless automatic and manual transmissions and potent engines–particularly the melodic flat-six–complete the picture. Although the 2021 Cayman is more expensive than its distinguished competitors, the Chevy Corvette, and Toyota Supra it’s still the most satisfying and focused choice in this segment.

What’s new for 2021?

Porsche adds more standard features to the Cayman for 2021. This includes Apple CarPlay integration and auto-dimming backview mirrors. Bixenon headlights turn with the steering wheel. The Cayman GTS is a new model. It features a naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-6. The GT4 RS also has this engine, but the GTS has 29 more horsepower. For a total of 394, the GTS has 394. The six-cylinder engine can now be used with Porsche’s seven speed dual-clutch auto.

Pricing and Which One To Buy

The 2021 Cayman models will see an increase in price compared to the previous model year. For example, the base model is $2400 more than the previous model year. The 350-hp four-cylinder S model has been recommended before. Although it is still the best value for money, the flat-six offers a more straightforward package than the GT4 RS. We can’t deny that it’s the one that we would choose. The standard manual transmission is also recommended as it is more enjoyable than the auto and could be retired at any time. Every GTS includes desirable performance equipment such as the sporty and adjustable Sport Seats Plus, a snorty intake system, an adaptive sport-tuned suspension and black 20-inch wheels. The Sport Chrono package adds a limited slip differential, brake-based torque vectoring and the obligatory clock to the top of the dashboard.

Engine, Transmission, & Performance

Porsche Cayman offers a variety of powerful engines. The 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four with 300 horsepower is the entry-level model. The turbocharged 2.5-liter flat four produces 350 horses in the S variant. We are not impressed by the harsh sounds produced by the four-cylinders. The naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat six solves the Cayman’s auditory problems. The six-cylinder makes intoxicating sounds and generates 394 ponies in GTS 4.0, 414 in GT4 RS. Regardless of which engine you choose, every Cayman comes standard with a slick six-speed manual transmission–perhaps the best one on the market. If you’re not into that, you can get a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. The Cayman’s telepathic steering and willful chassis are perfection. The Cayman’s unique mid-engine layout and sticky summer tire combine to give the sports coupe incredible balance and stability when driving on two-lane roads. This car has a wonderful combination of relaxed handling and heady handling.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

According to the EPA, the base Cayman can achieve 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The S model, which is more powerful, is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway with an automatic. A manual-equipped GT4 RS GT4 RS is rated as 16 mpg in city and 23 highway. Both the base car as well as the Cayman S were tested on our 200-mile highway route and both produced 32 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

The Cayman cabin has a form-fitting feel, thanks to its easy-to-understand gauges and comfortable seats. The interior is not the most distinctive in this class due to a multitude of buttons and cheap plastic parts. Porsche can cover almost any surface with leather, but at a price. The Cayman’s compact front trunk is a complement to its rear cargo area. This small sports car has cargo space that rivals any of its competitors. Two carry-on suitcases can be stuffed in the truck, and two more in the trunk. To make the most of the space available, owners will need soft duffel bags due to the steep rear hatch angle.

Infotainment & Connectivity

The Cayman’s touchscreen infotainment system, which is standard on all models, is simple and responds quickly to user inputs. Porsche tries to nickel and dime its customers by charging extra features such as Wi-Fi hotspots and built-in navigation, but all models now have Apple CarPlay compatibility. Android Auto is not available. You can upgrade the audio system to a Bose stereo, or a Burmester high-end unit with 12 speakers and an 821 watt total output.
