The 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Turbo and Turbo S will launch another powerful salvo in horsepower wars. They can produce up to 640 horsepower. Although they are all high-output cars, such as the Mercedes-AMG GT R’s 577 horsepower, the Audi R8’s 602hp, and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo’s 631hp, none of them have the same history and heritage. They come in coupe and cabriolet body styles and offer the same standard and optional equipment that lesser 911 models, but they are powered by a twin-turbocharged flat-six engine with 3.7-liter displacement located at the rear. Although the 2021 911 Turbos can be very costly, their exceptional performance and amazing driving nature make them worthy of our Editors’ Choice list.
What’s new for 2021?
The 2021 911 Turbo S and Turbo S models, based on the Porsche 911 of the future 992-generation are both new.
Pricing and Which One To Buy
Turbo S models are required to unlock all of the six-cylinder’s 640 HP. The drop-top cabriolet model is attractive, but we prefer the coupe because of its simplicity. Every Turbo S includes 18-way, adjustable sport seats, 10.9 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bose surround sound stereo, carbon-fiber interior trim and Porsche’s Sport Chrono package.
Performance, Transmission and Engine
The Turbo S and Turbo S have a twin-turbocharged, 3.7-liter flat-6 engine. This makes up to 640 horsepower. The Turbo model makes 572 horsepower. Standard is all-wheel drive. Shifts are handled by an 8-speed dual-clutch auto transmission. Porsche claims that the Turbo S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, but it was able to reach 60 mph in 2.2 seconds on our track. The 911 Turbo is a performance powerhouse with its explosive acceleration and incredible cornering grip. It also has strong brakes, which makes it an absolute performance powerhouse.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
The EPA estimates that fuel-economy is 15 mpg in cities and 20 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, we have not been able to run the 75-mph highway fuel economy test. However, we will update this story with test results. Visit the EPA website for more information on the 911 Turbo’s fuel economy.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo
The Turbo and Turbo S can technically be four-seaters like all 911 models. However, adults cannot use the rear seats. The cabin is similar to the entry-level 911 Carrera models, but has racier trim and more expensive options. There are also plenty of standard technology features, such as a reconfigurable digital gauge. The 911 has a trunk that can hold two suitcases. The rear seats fold up to make a flat cargo area. In our testing, six cases were possible to fit behind the front seats.
Infotainment & Connectivity
The 911 Turbo and Turbo S have digital gauges in front. They also come standard with the same large touchscreen infotainment screen as other 911s. It is fully integrated with Porsche’s intuitive software interface. Bose’s premium audio system is standard. A Burmester stereo and Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM satellite broadcast, and Apple CarPlay capability are optional. Android Auto is not yet included in the feature list for any Porsche model.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Porsche’s warranty coverage for this segment is fairly standard. The first service visit is free. The Jaguar F-Type SVR, however, offers more value with up to five-year coverage.
